2010 August 10: Richard (Dick) Scott

Richard (Dick) Alan Scott, 75, resident of Danville passed away on Monday, August 23, 2010 in the comfort of his home after a long year of battling many challenges. Dick spent a large portion of his 75 years in the Bay Area. Born and raised in the Berkeley/Oakland area. Preceded in death by his parents Jessie Watts Veirs Scott and Alan Scott. Dick served in the Air Force in Germany for three years. Subsequently graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Business.


He joined Longs Drugs, advanced from a Department Manager to Executive Vice President. Leaving Long's in 1988 Dick became chairman and CEO of the newly formed American Drug Stores, a division of American Stores Company comprising its Osco Drug and Sav-on Drugs divisions. After leaving American Stores Company in 1990, he pursued other entrepreneurial ventures.


Associates and friends felt that Dick was motivational and larger than life. Dick is survived by his wife Alice, married 44 years; daughters Kelly Lynn Scott in San Diego CA and Kristin Scott Werner, husband Dave; two granddaughters Mackenzie Kelly and Reagan Lee residing in Boulder, CO. He is also survived by his brother Donald Scott and three nephews. In lieu of flowers the family is recommending donations may be made to one of the following: Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Ave Pleasant Hill, CA 94523 or The Bay Area Crisis Nursery, 1506 Mendocino Drive, Concord, CA 94521. No services will be held.
