2012 April 10: Lionel Buckley

Lionel H. Shine Buckley, at the age of 89, passed away April 10, 2012. He was born in Boston, raised and educated in Quincy, MA.


He was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie (Comis) Buckley and the loving father of Bruce (ret. MSP) and his wife Nancy of East Sandwich, Brian and his wife Nancy of Quincy , Bradford of Quincy and his companion Donna Parrish of Duxbury, and Brett and his wife Lisa of Weymouth. Devoted grandfather of Bridget, Jesse, Jayme and great-grandfather of Caroline and Arianna. Shine was a 1940 graduate of Quincy High and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he is a veteran of World War II. A 1948 graduate of Boston University, he earned his Masters from B.U. in 1952. Former teacher, counselor and coach in the Boston Public Schools, Shine also worked for 38 years as the supervisor General in the Quincy Recreation Department. He was also a sports writer for the Quincy patriot Ledger from 1955 to 1963. After retirement he worked for the Massachusetts Racing Commission and Alves Photo. He was a member and Past President of the Quincy High School Football Hall of Fame, past member of the Quincy Lodge of Elks and a parishioner of St. Anns Church for the past 60 years. Shine loved to travel with his family, had an interest in aviation, was an avid Boston sports fan and was a Greyhound Racing enthusiast. Funeral from the Deware Funeral Home, 576 Hancock St., Quincy, Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 9 a.m. A funeral Mass will be held in St. Marys Church Crescent St., Quincy at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invitied. Visiting hours Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. Interment in St. Marys Cemetery.
