Arlene was born on June 20, 1924, at Davis to Carl and Fannie (DeVries) Erickson. She grew up on a farm south of Davis with her older brother, Wayne and younger sister, Gladys. Arlene was confirmed at Melhus Lutheran Church in rural Centerville. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1942.
On Feb. 2, 1944, Arlene married Clifford H. Osthus at Beresford. The couple farmed near Centerville, later moving into Centerville to operate Cliff’s Feed and Seed. Arlene also managed a dress shop. In 1962, they moved to Rapid City and in 1965, they moved to Watertown, where Arlene worked at Osco Drug and then K-Mart where she retired. Cliff passed away in 1985 and Arlene continued to make Watertown her home until moving to Sioux Falls in 2007.
She was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown and a current member of Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Arlene’s faith was of utmost importance to her. She enjoyed her work and loved spending time with her family. Family, faith and work were most important in her life. Arlene also enjoyed making lefsa and all of the family favorites. Her candy dish was always full!
Arlene is survived by her four children, Gordon (Lynn) Osthus of Watertown, Larry (Jodi) Osthus of Des Moines, Iowa, and Brent (Dianne) Osthus and Brenda (Merlin) Smith, all of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Gladys (Wallace) Larson of Pierre; and three sisters-in-law, Erma Osthus of Viborg and Dagny Twedt and Bonnie Erickson, both of Beresford.
