Robert Leroy Gerard, 89, of South Bend died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 3rd. Mr. Gerard was born August 10, 1925 In Kosciusko County, IN to the late Carrie E. (Swick) and Fred L.
Gerard and lived in South Bend since 1950. On June 14, 1947 in Bourbon, IN he married Dorothy I. Carlson, from Pueblo, Colorado, and the marriage was blessed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka. Dorothy survives along with his daughter, Cynthia I. Peacock of South Bend; his son, Barry A. Gerard (Jinny) of Niles, MI ; eight grandchildren; Andrew Place, Jr. (Nicole), Lindsey Downey (Ben), Chelsey Peacock, Robert Peacock, Ryan Gerard (Erin), Chris Gerard (Kim), Greg Gerard (Ashley), and Lizanne Gerard; thirteen great-grandchildren, and his brother, Allen Gerard (Rosie) of Tucson, AZ. One grandson, Alexander Gerard, preceded him in death.
Bob was a Pharmacy graduate of Purdue University and a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was co-owner of the former Gerard Pharmacy for over thirty-three years. When the business was sold, he worked for and retired from Osco Drug. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew B-25’s. He continued to enjoy flying long after his discharge from the Army Air Corps.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed fly fishing in Colorado, hunting, gardening, and golfing. He was an avid supporter of his children and grandchildren in all of their academic and sporting events.
There will be a private celebration of Bob’s life in the near future. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
