Leila Joyce Sawtelle, 85, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away on October 22, 2015, at the Hawkeye Care Center and under the care of the Iowa River Hospice Home.
Funeral services for Leila will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 26, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Leila Weeces was born on June 17, 1930, in Osmond, Nebraska to Earl and Mina Ireland Weeces. She graduated from Osmond High School in 1947 then went on to Drake University in Des Moines to take pharmacy training and graduated in August of 1951. On July 4, 1952, Leila was united in marriage to Stanley Sawtelle in Osmond, and they moved to Marshalltown in 1954. Leila was a member of the Central Christian Church in Marshalltown and held numerous positions: Elder, Deacon, Board Chair (as well as vice chair and secretary), CWF President and Circle Leader. She was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Auxiliary as a past local and state officer. Leila was also on the Binford House Board as president, secretary and treasurer. Leila had worked as a pharmacist at Greger Drug, Clinic Pharmacy, Osco Drug and Hartliep Pharmacy. Leila was an avid reader and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Leila is survived by her children: Sherry (Kevin) Horner, of Marshalltown, Jim (Jana) Sawtelle, of Grinnell, and Wayne (Ann) Sawtelle, of Marshalltown. Grandchildren: Cal Hultman, Jessica Sternhagen, Kim Scarborough, Kameron Sawtelle, Allison Stevick and Kelsey Sawtelle. She is also survived by fifteen great grandchildren and many other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
Leila is preceded in death by her husband Stan; parents Earl and Mina; brothers Clyde, Eugene, Richard and Norman Weeces and grandchildren Heather Hofer and Troy Sawtelle
