2015 October 24: Erwin Karlin

Erwin Karlin, 88 years old, passed away peacefully at home on October 24.


He was the son of the late Harry and Florence Karlin. In October 1952, he married Corinne (Goldberg) Karlin, who survives him as well as his sons: Marty (Nanci) Karlin of Buffalo Grove, IL, Gary Karlin of Harrison, NY, and daughter, Sharon Karlin Avisror of Indianapolis. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Nancy Joy Karlin of Indianapolis. He also leaves behind four granddaughters: Sara Karlin of Seattle, WA, Kimberly Karlin of Buffalo Grove, IL, Talia Avisror of Indianapolis, and Kayla Avisror of Indianapolis; and three nieces: Shonnie (Lou) Klatch of South Bend, Esther (Albert) Goetz of Anondale, VA, and Regina Jacobs of Boca Raton, FL. Erwin was a registered pharmacist for many years and co-owned Karlin Rexall Drugs in Mishawaka with his father, Harry, also a pharmacist. He later worked as a pharmacist at Newman's Pharmacy, Osco Drug and Kroger.


He served as president of the South Bend Pharmaceutical Association. He graduated from John Adams High School (Class of 1945), playing varsity baseball and basketball there. He got his degree in pharmacy from Butler University after serving in the Army. He was a longtime, integral member of Sinai Synagogue and B'nai Brith, and participated extensively in programs offered by the Jewish Federation. His greatest loves in life were his wife and family. His gentle smile and irrepressible sense of humor will be missed by those who knew him.
