2016 April 30: George Levey

George Levey, age 84, of Yarmouth Port, MA (formerlyof Lynnfield and Sandwich, MA), passed away after a long illness on April 30, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.


George was born May 14, 1931 in Roxbury, MA. He was the second of four sons of Maurice and Dora (Seckman) Levey of Winthrop, MA. George attended Northeastern University for two years, and went on to receive his Bachelors of Science Degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1954. George was a medic in the 102nd Fighter Interceptor Wing Massachusetts National Guard at Logan International Airport from 1952 to 1959.


He met the love of his life, Sandy (Smilkstein), of Mt. Kisco, NY, in 1954. George and Sandy married in 1956, and raised their three children in Lynnfield, MA. George first owned Tarr Pharmacy in Lynn, MA, then opened Levey Pharmacy in Lynnfield, with his brother, Norman, in 1960. He finished his career working for Osco Drug in Gloucester, MA, before retiring to Cape Cod.


Married for 59 years, George is survived by his dear wife, Sandy. He is also survived by his son, Kenneth Levey, his wife Michelle and daughter Becca, of Tacoma, WA; his daughter, Devorah Allen, her husband Jim and their children Jack and Jenny, of Sandwich, MA; and his daughter Beth Brown, her husband Eric and their daughter Callie, of Middletown, RI. George is also survived by his brothers, Harold Levey, Norman Levey (Barbara) and Robert Levey (Ellen); numerous loving nieces and nephews, their children; and cherished friends, old and new.


George was known to all as a sweet, kind and funny man, never shying away from sharing a good story. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, who took great joy in teaching his grandchildren how to hold a golf club or cast into the surf. An artist at heart, George was an accomplished wood carver and painter. He grew up at the ocean and was never too far from it throughout his life.


The family wishes to thank the amazing caregivers at Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehab Center in Brewster, MA for their support and wonderful care of George.


A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 22 at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA.
