The Food and Drug Administration has approved Narcan, prescription nasal spray that reverses opioid overdoses, to be sold over the counter.
The FDA's move could save more lives by providing wider access to overdose medication.
Public-health officials and treatment experts, had long sought OTC approval in the hope that wider availability of the medicine would reduce drug fatalities.
There were more than 100,000 drug-related deaths in the United States for each of the past two years, according to the FDA.
