Where Are They Now: Gene Mlenar

Updated: Apr 9, 2022

Howdy y'all from the great state of Texas!

Jane and I relocated 1 1/2 years ago from beautiful Scottsdale. Jane accepted a high-profile assignment with Bed Bath & Beyond and we transferred to Austin.

In 2006, I stepped away from retail after 37 amazing years in the business. In 2007, Jane and I were married at the Little White chapel in Las Vegas. I got to be one of the luckiest guys in the world!

During the past 15 years I've kept busy as an Independent Contractor. First working in the vending business with my father-in-law, went on to real estate and wholesaling houses (Buy Low... Sell High... fun times) and also have done digital marketing for small businesses. Currently, I'm the lead golfer assistant at the Onion Creek Club here in Austin. The perks are amazing! So, if you are into golf and passing through central Texas, let me know and we'll play a round or two on a very nice course.

I was extremely fortunate to have so many memorable moments during my career. I look back and smile at the great teams I worked with (e.g., Skaggs entry into California, The Clarks drug integration, Lucky / Savon combos), the outstanding mentors (e.g., Ostrander, Degaetano, Panzer) and the amazing leaders (e.g., Tripp, Terry, White,) ...it just blows me away. I only wished I would have taken even more advantage of all their greatness. The biggest gift from all of this is the strong forever relationships. This begins with the 50 years of friendships with Bob Godlasky, Bruce Smith and Russ Doose. We all worked together at Skaggs Drug Center #39 Pueblo in 1972. Happy to say we are all still in touch with each other. Bruce and I get together as often as possible.

Jane and I like to travel. Jane loves her cats, volunteers at the cat rescue and does YOGA. I love my golf and watch the key sporting events. My daughter, Frankie lives in California and my stepson Joey is in Phoenix. Both are doing very well!
