Thomas Anthony McGovern—known as Tom, Tommy, #3, New Tom, Whistling Dog Walker, Hon, Dear, Dad, and especially Silly Grandpa—84, of Annapolis, MD, passed away on April 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and an unwavering smile.

Born on August 18, 1941, in St. Joseph, MO, to Joe and Katherine McGovern, Tom was the third of eight children. He grew up in Aurora, IL, where he attended Marmion Military Academy, later graduating from the University of Illinois Chicago with a degree in Pharmacy. On June 20, 1962, shortly after graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Pfeiffer. They shared nearly 50 years of devotion until her passing in 2011.

Tom’s professional career began at a corner drugstore in North Aurora before he began a long tenure with Osco Drug as a Purchasing Manager—or as he liked to joke, a "drug dealer." His final professional years were spent in Boston with Stop & Shop, before he eventually retired in 2000 from Giant Food in Maryland.

In retirement, Tom stayed active with the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, eventually becoming a Grand Knight. He spent many hours on the golf course and took great pride in being the family’s "silly" grandpa. In 2000, Tom and Pat resettled in Maryland alongside their son Barry and his wife Ruth to begin a new chapter. They lived briefly in Huntingtown before settling in Severna Park until 2011. After Pat’s passing, Tom moved down the street from his grandkids in Pasadena, finally settling into the easy life at Baywoods of Annapolis for his last five years.

Tom and Pat were deeply committed to their grandchildren’s lives, present for every milestone—from being at the hospital for the birth of their first grandchild to constant babysitting duties and every birthday, concert, and game in between.

Wherever Tom and Pat were, their infamous Brandy Manhattans were not far behind. While the family still isn't sure if anyone else truly shared their appreciation for the drink, Tom loved nothing more than sharing conversation with friends and family at happy hour.

Tom is survived by his children, Barry McGovern (Ruth) and Leslie McGovern; his three beloved grandchildren, Tommy, Megan, and Rachael; and his siblings, Terry Truemper, Barb Gormly, Bridget Paluska, and John McGovern. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, and his sisters, Mary McGovern, Katherine Sheehan, and Jennifer Szerletich.

A memorial service will be held at Baywoods of Annapolis on Sunday, May 31, at 3:00 PM, followed by a happy hour with hors d'oeuvres and Brandy Manhattans.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
